Looking for feedback on proposed Bernard Beach boardwalk design
Town staff want your feedback! Since the construction of a storm outlet at Bernard Beach, south of Thunder Bay Road, a number of concerns have been raised by the public. Recognizing these concerns, the Town of Fort Erie has allocated funds to design and construct a boardwalk for public use. The boardwalk will improve access to the beach and provide cover for the storm outlet pipe.

The boardwalk will improve access to the beach and provide cover for the storm outlet pipe.
Following consultation with Public Works staff, Parks staff and a landscape architect, a draft boardwalk design was developed. The proposed boardwalk will be constructed on the west side of the beach allowance, starting from the crest of the hill and extending just short of the water's edge. The public is asked to review the attached design and provide comments by November 13, 2020.

We live a block from this beach. The storm water system that was installed over 10 years ago was a disaster and ended up making the beach unusable for most as it kept the sand wet all the time. The concrete structure at the beginning of the beach exudes and odour all the time from debris from the storm sewer. A better outlet is needed (not a boardwalk). Years ago, all there was was a corrugated storm pipe into the water. Why can't this suffice? It should be buried as much as possible. The Town needs to keep up their beaches for both residents and visitors. People just was a place to sit and swim. Don't over think it. Find a way to keep sand in place. On Florida beaches, they put small break-walls up into the water to keep the waves from washing the sand away. I would rather see an activity like that. Any wooden structure will be washed away by storms and ice. At the end of the day, this "beach" is just the end of the road allowance of Bernard Road so it was never meant to be a showpiece/destination beach. Keep it sand covered and usable but spend your money fixing up Centralia beach and the trail that leads to it. Parking area over there (at Centralia) is pot-holed and full of litter all the time. Spending on maintenance is money better spent than big capital projects that go unmaintained.
1 comment4Tbsx2324over 3 years agonot a good place or a good time for this
Covid/social distancing would not work well with this idea. Not only is it a bad time but that is a bad area to have the boardwalk. I feel like this is to benefit those with cottages More than the citizens of fort erie. The beach has been blocked off with fences due to the homes for years and when it gained popularity in the summer there was major over crowding issues and no room for people to properly social distance. This might be a good idea if it was in a differant area where more residents could access it but to have it at bernard beach is just not wise at all. I hope this idea will be rethought over and saved for maybe a later date not during the midst of a pandemic where social distancing is key, this is not feasible.
0 comment2Juneover 3 years agoThe project has not been fully explained. Is the drain to be reworked or just covered over with an expensive boardwalk?
This beach has been a disaster since the drain and holding tank were installed. The drain needs to be reworked. There are other road allowances with simple pipes that aren't eyesores. Why was money expended on engineering drawings before public consultation? Was the project brought before council? I don't see that on the timeline. Before spending money on a boardwalk there are other places that need basic maintenance like the slippery slope at Burleigh Road.
0 comment3Emiover 3 years agoA Boardwalk will not enhance this sweet little local beach.
Bernard Beach is not and never has been what you’d call a Vacation Destination! It is a tiny little beach enjoyed by locals and summer residents. Generations of families have walked their beach blankets and chairs from the public parking lot down to the sandy beach to enjoy the shore of Lake Erie. The storm drain was not welcome and has added nothing positive to Bernard Beach. Covering it up with a boardwalk will ruin what’s left of places to park your blanket on the sand. Stop wasting time and money on the Boardwalk idea please. Bury it as RNA suggested.
1 comment3Sgiarcover 3 years agoI think a minimalist approach would be the best. Storms every year cause property damage as witnessed by the bay beach promenade.
Save the money for something else. The beach is small enough already.
