What guidelines will the Town consider when naming or renaming a park?
The following guidelines, as outlined in the Park Naming Policy, will be considered:
Why does the Town need to consult with the community?
Town parks are an important part of the community fabric and their names contribute to creating a sense of place, community and identity. A park name can reflect and acknowledge its unique location, history, geography, environment and/or neighbourhood.
The renaming of a park has a much greater impact than inceptive naming. The tradition, continuity and identification of names are imbedded in the community and tied to important community values. Consideration of a park renaming request carries a higher threshold of significance, relevance and necessity.
To this end, it is important that the community have input into the renaming of an existing or new park.
If my parking naming application is approved, can I select the signage or plaque for the park?
Park wayfinding signage shall be consistent with the Town’s wayfinding standards and installed by the Town.
Any additional signage requested by an applicant will be considered through a separate process, pursuant to the Town of Fort Erie Guidelines for the Installation of Interpretive Pieces on Municipal Property (2014).
How long will a park naming or renaming application take to process?
The processing of a park naming or renaming application will depend upon several factors such as the completeness and accuracy of the application, the availability of staff resources, and any additional research required.
Will I be responsible for any costs if I apply to name or rename a park?
There is no application fee for a park naming or renaming. If approved by Council, the Town shall bear administrative and Town signage costs. All other associated costs shall be the responsibility of the applicant.
