What is happening at Lions Sugarbowl Park?

Lions Sugarbowl Park was constructed in 1995, and is one of the Town’s largest and most popular community parks. Located at 100 Gilmore Road adjacent to the Fort Erie Central Library, Central Fire Station, the Fort Erie Railway Museum and Fort Erie International Academy, this destination park includes an off-leash dog park; a playground that will be replaced in 2022; pathways, ponds and seating areas; and the Dreams to Memories memorial tree grove. Lions Sugarbowl Park is the site of numerous annual events and celebrations throughout the year.

Through the 2022 Capital Budget process, Council approved funding to replace the Kinsmen Pool with a free, accessible and inclusive destination splashpad, as well as construct an accessible public washroom.

The Town has retained the IBI Group to work with the Town and the community to explore design alternatives and develop a final plan for the Lions Sugarbowl Park splashpad and washroom.

At its meeting of August 8, 2022, Council approved the final design for the Lions Sugarbowl Park Splashpad. The design can be viewed in Report PDS-57-2022, attached under 'Documents'.

This presentation shows three different layout options which include a splashpad, new pathways, a universally accessible washroom, and shade structures. Five different splashpad themes are also presented for consideration, as well as multiple design options for the washroom building and shade structures.

    Concept #1

Concept 1 locates the splashpad north of the existing playground space. The washroom building would be located to the east, between the two existing asphalt paths. Concept #1 includes six small shade structures, split between the playground and the splashpad. Additional benches and shade trees are proposed along the pathways.

    Concept #2

Concept 2 locates the splashpad directly west of the playground area. The washroom building is located on the south side of the splashpad, closer to Gilmore Road. Like Concept 1, there are six proposed shade structures, split evenly between the playground and splashpad. Additional benches and shade trees are proposed along the asphalt paths.

    Concept #3

Concept 3 brings the splashpad closest to Gilmore Road, between it and the existing playground area. The washroom building is proposed to the west of the existing asphalt trail and playground. In this option, there is one singular shade structure centralized between the playground and splashpad. Due to grading, retaining walls will be required to manage changes in grade. Only one new asphalt trail is proposed to link the new spaces to the existing park pond.

    Splashpad Themes

There are five proposed themes for the splashpad, as shown through the surface paving and the spray fixtures. The paving design will be finalized once the splashpad layout and themes are determined. In the comment section of the survey, let us know which splashpad features are your favourite - we will design the final splashpad based on the most popular features.

    Shade Structures

Represented on this page are seven different kinds of shade structures of varying scale. Each style of fixture can come in a vast array of colours. Some include the option of built-in seating. Shapes include hexagons, rectangles & squares. In the comment section of the survey, share which structures you like.

    Universally Accessible Washroom Building

The washroom building is to include two universally accessible rooms and a separate mechanical room which will house the splash pad services. Represented in these photos are options for exterior finishes, rooflines, and door configurations. Note: the top two photos include a third door on the rear of the building for the mechanical room.
