What is the Rural Road Speed Limit Study?

The Town of Fort Erie initiated the Rural Road Speed Limit Study in response to concerns raised by residents about speeding on the Town’s rural roads. The study is reviewing speed limits on 30 road segments covering approximately 75 kilometres of Fort Erie’s rural arterial and collector roads to identify locations where adjustments should be considered to enhance road user safety and promote consistent operating conditions. All road users, including pedestrians, people who use mobility devices, cyclists, and motorists, are being considered in arriving at the recommended speed limit for each roadway.

How is the Study Being Done?

The Town has retained Paradigm Transportation Solutions Limited and LURA Consulting to complete the study. The consulting team visited each road to observe conditions and assemble the data needed to complete the reviews. This data provides the basis for the technical evaluation following the Transportation Association of Canada’s (TAC) Canadian Guidelines for Establishing Posted Speed Limits. These guidelines help traffic practitioners set rational, relatable speed limits matching the function and physical characteristics of the road. Setting posted limits using this approach will help the Town meet its objectives of improving safety, increasing pedestrian comfort, and reducing noise from vehicles travelling Fort Erie’s rural roads.

The Town is hosting an Online Public Information Centre to obtain your input on the Rural Road Speed Limit Study findings and recommendations. Please review the presentation below that provides an overview of the report, available on the left of the screen, and share your feedback by taking this short survey. The survey will be available until April 26th, 2022.
