Sanitary Sewer Lateral CCTV Inspection Program

As part of the Town of Fort Erie's ongoing efforts to maintain and improve its wastewater infrastructure, the Engineering Department is progressing through key phases of the 2025 Trenchless Rehabilitation Program. This program is designed to identify areas where trenchless rehabilitation of the sanitary sewer system—including sewer services—is appropriate and effective.

2025 Trenchless Rehabilitation Program Key Components

The full scope of the Trenchless Rehabilitation Program includes the following phases:

  • âś… Drainage Survey Inspections (Completed)
  • 🔧 Smoke Testing Investigations (In Progress)
  • 🔍 Sanitary Sewer Lateral CCTV Investigations (In Progress)
  • 🕳️ Maintenance Hole Inspections
  • 🔄 Sanitary Sewer Mainline Trenchless Rehabilitation
  • 🔄 Sanitary Sewer Lateral Trenchless Rehabilitation
  • 🧱 Sanitary Sewer Maintenance Hole Rehabilitation

By implementing trenchless rehabilitation, the Town can proactively maintain the sanitary system, reduce the risk of backups and overflows, and ensure compliance with environmental and regulatory standards.

What is the Sanitary Sewer Lateral CCTV Investigation Program?

The Sanitary Sewer Lateral CCTV Investigation is an assessment of Town-owned sanitary sewer laterals. These laterals are the underground pipes that carry wastewater from a property's plumbing to the Town’s main sewer line. The portion of the lateral within the municipal right-of-way is owned and maintained by the Town.

Using closed-circuit television (CCTV) technology, crews inspect these laterals to identify:

  • Infiltration or structural damage
  • Root intrusions
  • Evidence of deterioration
  • Sources of Inflow and Infiltration (I&I)

These inspections provide the data needed to prioritize repairs, replacements, and trenchless rehabilitation work.

How This Program Helps

Through targeted inspections and data collection, this program will inform the Trenchless Rehabilitation program and allow the Town to:

  • Locate and eliminate sources of I&I
  • Plan cost-effective infrastructure improvements
  • Reduce the risk of flooding and overflows and gain sewer capacity
  • Lower operational costs at treatment plants

This supports the Town’s long-term infrastructure sustainability and protects both public health and the environment.

Where is the Work Happening?

Inspections and investigations are currently focused in key priority areas:
